Does life coaching work?

Yes, and you get out what you put in. Think of a personal trainer at the gym. He may be able to give you the best nutrition and fitness guidance known to man, but it is still up to you to do the work. You can’t outsource your push-ups.

Similarly, life coaching works at its best when the client takes personal responsibility for his or her success. I will work hard to give you incredible insight and accountability to help you get out of your own way, but you must put in the work. I promise you that I will do what it takes to help you achieve your goals, but I will not work harder for your success than you are willing to for yourself.

How will I know if coaching is for me?

If you are open to ideas other your own and you find value in having an outside, unbiased perspective whose sole purpose is to help you generate learning and to take action toward your goals, then you’d probably get a lot out of coaching. The best way for you to know if coaching is for you is to experience it for yourself. That is why many coaches offer a free initial session.

Isn’t life coaching cheesy, weird, and woo-woo?

I used to think so before I learned what professional coaching really is. There may be a misconception that coaching consists of searching for your spirit animal while dancing on a mountaintop playing a piccolo.

In reality, coaching in its truest form is extremely grounded and focused on where you currently are in your life, where you want to go, and how you’re going to get there.  My approach is pragmatic and consists of direct communication. I may insist that you link your work to a greater purpose, but I won’t be asking you to find your chakra or hug a tree any time soon…unless you want to.

For me, coaching is about helping you gain clarity on exactly what you want. Through learning and self-awareness, we come up with action steps and accountability on how to achieve it. To me, to not put in the time and effort to create the life that you truly want is what is weird.

How will I know if we’re a good fit?

The first step is to have the Discovery Session to see if we work well together. In general, we will be a good fit if you’re open-minded, willing to take personal responsibility for your success, generally a positive person, willing to step outside of your comfort zone, willing to take risks, willing to try new things, and are ready to make changes in your life, both big and small. I want to iterate that you only need to be willing to want to have those qualities. You may not be there yet, which is perfectly okay, but there has to be a desire to possess some of those qualities if you seek personal and professional growth.

Is what we talk about confidential?

Yes, it is part of the ICF Code of Ethics.

Do you work with clients who are currently seeing a therapist?

Yes, and do so regularly as long as the therapist is aware of our work together and we are not working on the same issues.

Do you work with teens?

I don’t personally anymore, but I used to. I now have a team of coaches under my guidance who have been trained to work with teens in a separate program called Academic Life Coaching. Click HERE for more information.
