Inspiration is not Transformation

We have confused being moved with being changed.

A powerful story.
A vulnerable share.
A moment that gives you chills.

We call it transformation.

It is not.

I’ve been in many groups where vulnerability is encouraged and celebrated. Often it looks like someone sharing adversity and how they overcame it. This is important and courageous, but it is not transformation.

Inspiration can open something inside us. It can soften us, wake us up, even bring us to tears.

Transformation asks for more.

It asks for participation.

Real transformation does not happen in telling the story. It happens in examining it.

Why do I feel this?
What belief lies underneath?
Is it true?
How am I still living inside a story I think I have left behind?
What biases am I holding that shape what I notice and what I ignore?

In leadership, it goes further.

Where do my decisions favor comfort over courage?
Where do my blind spots quietly shape outcomes?
Where do good intentions mask my unexamined assumptions or unexamined privilege?

That is the work.

Not performative vulnerability.
Not compelling storytelling.

It is the quiet, uncomfortable willingness to confront ourselves.
To see what we have ignored.
To question what we take for granted.

Transformation is not a moment.

It is a practice.

And it rarely feels inspiring while you are in it.

Today, notice one belief, bias, or assumption you have taken for granted.

Ask if it is helping you lead, grow, and live as you intend.
