“The Brain Must Fail In Order To Succeed.”

A coach in the “Neuroscience of Coaching” course I co-teach recently told us how happy he was to incorporate neuroscience into a yoga class he was teaching. He reminded the yogis at the top of the class that the “brain must fail in order to succeed.”

He was inspired to share this with his yoga students because he remembered the power of neuroplasticity he learned in my course. The brain is indefatigably plastic, meaning it has the ability to grow and stretch until the day we die. But it is not a passive process.

How can we grow and stretch our brains?

Every skill set that we do (eg. yoga, coaching, riding a bike, managing emotions, etc.) has a space in our brain that has neural pathways and neural connections. The more connections and pathways we build for that skill set, the better we become at that skill.

The only way to build more neural pathways for a skill set is to make mistakes. The brain must make mistakes in order to learn. It is from making mistakes, getting feedback, and implementing the feedback in order to improve that leads to stronger neural connections and growth in the brain.

Our coach/yoga teacher in our Neuroscience of Coaching course reminded his students if a pose felt weird, or if they kept losing their balance, that it was a GOOD thing. These “failures” were a part of learning. Their brains were in the process of building more neural pathways for that pose. With this different perspective, the yoga students shifted from feeling frustrated to feeling empowered. They thanked the teacher at the end of the class saying that remembering that their brain is just in the process of learning made the experience a lot more enjoyable.

What skill sets would you like to fail at in order to get better at it?

Remember, if you’re not failing at something and making mistakes, it means you already know how to do it and you’re not learning.

I invite you to fail, fail, fail, and fail some more in 2022. If you do this and implement feedback and deliberate practice, your bigger, more healthy brain will thank you for it!
